In that incident, four fighter jets targeting Boko Haram militants mistakenly struck the market area, killing between 56 and 200 civilians, depending on varying local and UN security reports. In January 2025, another military airstrike killed at least 16 people in Zamfara after an army jet mistook local vigilantes for criminal gangs.

Security analysts repeatedly point to a severe lack of coordination between air force intelligence and ground personnel. Armed groups in the northwest, locally referred to as "bandits" who raid villages, extort farmers, and kidnap for ransom, often embed themselves deeply within rural civilian populations. While neutralizing these threats is a national priority, the human cost of these imprecise aerial bombardments has stretched the region’s humanitarian crisis to its breaking point.

The Nigerian military continues to deploy fighter jets against armed bandit groups, but a fatal lack of ground-level intelligence repeatedly places directly in the crossfire.
